Prescribed Burning to resume on Little Pine Island Mitigation Bank
Fires occur naturally in Florida, however, land managers also utilize prescribed burning to enhance, restore, and maintain native ecosystems that are dependent on periodic fires. Many of Little Pine Island’s restored native habitats including hydric pine flatwoods and freshwater marshes are fire dependent ecosystems.

- One year after 2007 prescribed burn (November 2008).
Ecologists at KLECE will be working with staff from the Florida Division of Forestry, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District to continue to apply prescribed burns as a habitat management tool. The prescribed burns will occur when the weather conditions are optimal between December 2009 and February 2010.
